We attract like people. We tend to seek familiar communities. Our social media and internet usage is based on algorithms created to predict what type of content we want to see based on our past behavior. Even our biology can draw us closer to people like us as a primal safety tool. All of these factors can lead us to live in our own echo chambers. A funhouse of mirrors with reflections that look like us with small tweaks and changes.
In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, we wanted to challenge ourselves to do it differently. To expand our circles, the perspectives and point of views we consume everyday. We went on a journey to find people that are “different like us, not from us”.
In 2019, the average instagram user spent 27 minutes a day on the platform. We asked ourselves, how can we use those 27 minutes to make an impact on how we show up in life. Use social media for good. To expand our interactions with people that we don’t currently have in our inner circles. Expanding our exposure to construct more bridges, a stronger level of understanding and empathy, and the ability to see how we are all humXns figuring out how to live the most authentic life to us.
We drafted this list, as a launching pad for others to expand their exposure and interactions on social beyond their current inner circles. Break the funhouse mirror and step into a world that is even more expansive, compassionate, and understanding.
That’s a world we want to be a part of.
